Rail Baltica launches tender for new section towards Panevėžys

Rail Baltica announces plans to move towards Panevėžys. Rail Baltica has taken another step forward with the announcement of a new public tender for construction on the Berčiūnai–Joniškėlis (Lithuania) section of its high-speed railway line. The tender, issued by LTG Infra, the infrastructure arm of the LTG Group, includes 12.4 km of embankment and engineering structures.

This initiative forms part of a broader plan to extend the Rail Baltica line by up to 114 km within Lithuania by the end of 2025. Current tenders across the network cover a total of 43 km of embankment and 10 km of superstructure.

LTG Infra CEO Vytis Žalimas said the project was progressing steadily: “By the end of the year, we intend to conclude contracts for the sections from Kaunas to Panevėžys and start preparatory works. Rapid infrastructure development is now one of the main priorities of LTG, Lithuania, and the EU.”

A further tender for 24.5 km of works on the Berčiūnai–Joniškėlis section is expected shortly, with activity set to reach Panevėžys District.

Antanas Pocius, Mayor of Panevėžys District Municipality, welcomed the development: “The imminent entry of construction works into Panevėžys District is an important milestone in the implementation of a strategic project of European significance. We are ready to cooperate and to help, to the best of our abilities, to ensure that the construction works of the high-speed railway are carried out quickly and successfully.”

In March, LTG Infra also launched a tender for mainline construction linking the under-construction Šveicarija–Žeimiai–Šėta–Ramygala line with Kaunas. Up to 10 km of double-track line between Šveicarija and Žeimiai is expected to be completed by the end of 2025.
