Portugal sells rail freight unit to Mediterranean Shipping Company

CP Carga_card_CP_Carga_260515The Portuguese government approved the sale of CP Carga, the rail freight unit, to Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) for the amount of EUR 53 million. The other two bidders were Atena Equity Partners and Cofihold. This amount includes the purchase price of the shares of the company (EUR 2 mln), the acquisition of debts (MSC will take over all the debts of the CP Carga) and capitalization commitments of the company, the Secretary of State for Infrastructures, Transport and Communications, Sérgio Monteiro said.
The Secretary of State for Transport and Infrastructure said that under this privatization process, the CP struggled to capitalize EUR 110 million, through the transfer of locomotives and wagons of that worth the amount of EUR 110 million, which will be used by the MSC Rail.
The government also decided to cancel the sale of state-owned railway equipment maintenance firm EMEF.
