Port Polska and PKP Cargo have signed a letter of intent regarding cooperation to develop rail freight transport in Poland, following the implementation of similar measures for passenger transport.
The document signed by the two companies provides for the freight operator’s involvement as early as the design phase of the new infrastructure, so that rail lines, terminals, and logistics facilities are tailored to the requirements of freight transport from the outset.
The Port Polska program is not limited to building the new airport and investing in passenger rail transport. It also includes the development of modern infrastructure dedicated to freight transport, considered essential for the economy and for the resilience of Poland’s supply chains.
The letter of intent marks the beginning of the collaboration between Centralny Port Komunikacyjny (CPK), the company responsible for implementing the Port Polska program, and PKP Cargo, Poland’s leading rail freight operator. The two parties will jointly explore solutions for the development of rail freight transport, drawing on the operator’s experience in planning new rail lines, logistics terminals, and technical infrastructure.
“Modern infrastructure is designed in collaboration with those who will use it. That is why we want to draw on the experience of freight transport operators as early as the planning phase. This ensures that the infrastructure we build will effectively meet the needs of all market participants,” said Filip Czernicki, CEO of CPK – Port Polska.
Freight transport will be integrated into the Port Polska project
The cooperation between the two companies will include analyses of intermodal transport development, the organization of freight traffic, the location of logistics terminals and industrial lines, as well as the identification of the infrastructure requirements necessary for the operation of Port Polska.
Through this approach, Polish authorities aim to design an infrastructure capable of simultaneously meeting the needs of both passenger and freight transport. Thus, the new investments will be tailored to market demands from the moment they become operational.
The development of railway infrastructure under the Port Polska program will lead to increased network capacity, improved access to logistics terminals, and the creation of better conditions for intermodal freight transport. At the same time, the investments will help make freight transport more efficient, strengthen the railways’ competitiveness relative to road transport, and increase the resilience of supply chains.
Port Polska is one of the most important infrastructure projects currently under development in Poland. It centers on the new national airport but also includes an extensive network of high-speed and conventional rail lines, as well as logistics infrastructure for freight transport. The project’s goal is to transform Poland’s transportation system into a regional hub that efficiently connects air, rail, and road transport.
