PKP Intercity sets passenger record in November

Polish rail operator PKP Intercity set a new traffic record in November, transporting 7.6 million passengers. This represents an increase of 23% compared to November last year and approximately 40% compared to 2023.

In the first 11 months of 2025, PKP Intercity trains were used by 81.4 million passengers, already exceeding the result recorded for the whole of 2024, when the company reported 78.4 million passengers.

Heavy traffic during the Independence Day mini-holiday

The period from November 7 to 11, which included the mini-holiday on the occasion of Poland’s National Independence Day, was one of the busiest in the operator’s history.

Almost 1.4 million passengers traveled on long-distance trains, a volume even higher than during the May 1 mini-holiday, relative to a similar number of days off.

To cope with the high demand, PKP Intercity resorted to a record level of operational supplements. On November 11 alone, 139 trains were supplemented with 303 additional carriages.

Over the entire month, the company supplemented 1,459 trains, adding over 2,190 carriages.

The largest rolling stock contract in the history of PKP Intercity

Also in November, PKP Intercity signed a historic contract with Alstom Polska for the purchase of 42 double-decker electric multiple units (EMU’s), with a 30-year maintenance contract and an option for another 30 units.

It is the largest rolling stock contract in the company’s history in terms of the number of trains ordered.

The value of the delivery amounts to PLN 4.1 billion, and that of the maintenance services to nearly PLN 2.8 billion.

The new double-decker trains will be manufactured at Alstom’s plants in Chorzów and Nadarzyn and will be used mainly in the economy segment, offering increased capacity and a higher level of comfort.

Completion of the modernization of Z1B carriages

PKP Intercity also announced the completion of the acceptance of the last 26 modernized Z1B carriages.

They have been equipped with improved sound insulation, 230 V and USB sockets, individual lighting, air conditioning, Wi-Fi, and automatic doors.

The carriages are approved for speeds of up to 200 km/h and are already in use on routes such as Warsaw–Łódź–Zakopane and Łódź–Kołobrzeg.

The modernization was carried out by H. Cegielski – Fabryka Pojazdów Szynowych and was financed by the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (KPO).
