Webuild and its partners have completed the excavation of the 27 km of tunnels for Line 2 of the Lima Metro. The new line will reduce the travel time between Ate and Callao from over two and a half hours to approximately 45 minutes.
Excavation work for Line 2 of the Lima Metro, the largest urban mobility project ever undertaken in Peru’s capital, has been completed.
Italian contractor Webuild, which is carrying out the project alongside European and Peruvian partners, announced the completion of excavation work on the 27 km of tunnels planned for the new line’s route.
The milestone was marked by the breakthrough of the final concrete wall near Station 4. The project is now entering the phase of track laying, installation of technological systems, and completion of the stations.
Two machines dug beneath the capital’s streets
Two TBM – Tunnel Boring Machines were used to construct the tunnels, each with a cutting head over 10 meters in diameter.
They operated at depths of more than 12 meters beneath the streets of one of Latin America’s most densely populated metropolitan areas.
The new line will cross Lima from east to west, between the districts of Ate and Callao, and will connect to the Port of Callao and Jorge Chávez International Airport.
The route will serve residential neighborhoods, universities, shopping centers, industrial areas, and major logistics hubs.
The trip will be reduced to about 45 minutes
The journey between Ate and Callao currently takes over two and a half hours in heavy traffic and can take up to about two hours and 45 minutes.
Once the metro opens, the same trip is expected to take about 45 minutes.
Authorities estimate that the line will improve access for millions of residents to workplaces, educational institutions, and public services, and will reduce dependence on road transportation.
Line 2 will also be Peru’s first fully underground metro line.
A 35-km project with 35 stations
The contract awarded to the consortium led by Webuild includes the construction and operation under concession of Line 2, as well as a section of the future Line 4.
The entire project includes:
- 35 km of underground lines;
- 35 stations;
- 36 ventilation and evacuation shafts;
- two rail depots.
Once excavation is complete, work will focus on installing the tracks, power supply systems, signaling, operational systems, and station fit-outs.
One of Lima’s most important urban transit links
The new metro line follows one of the main transportation corridors in the Lima–Callao metropolitan area.
It will connect the eastern part of the capital with the port and airport areas and link neighborhoods that are currently separated by chronic traffic congestion.
Webuild, an Italian group specializing in infrastructure construction, claims to have built nearly 900 km of subway lines and approximately 3,500 km of tunnels worldwide to date.
The company is also involved in projects such as the Grand Paris Express, Line C of the Rome Metro, and the extension of the Red Line of the Riyadh Metro.
