Peru to launch tender for USD 2 billion rail tunnel project

excavationPeru’s Transport and Communications Ministry (MTC) has decided to build the trans-Andean tunnel, BNAmericas reports. A tender for technical studies for the project is due to be launched by the end of June, transport minister José Gallardo told local newspaper Correo.
The 23.2 km tunnel would start near a railway junction close to Río Blanco and end near Yauli. The total value of the project is estimated at USD 2 billion, of which state would invest USD 800 million and USD 1.2 billion will be private investment, Gallardo said.
The tunnel would lead to a portion of both motorists and freight operators using the railway instead of the busy route, central highway concessionaire Ferrocarril Central Andino’s VP, Juan de Dios Olaechea, told press. On parts of the highway heavy goods vehicles travel at speeds as low as 10km/h, he added.
