The Armadale Line in the Perth area reopened on 12 October 2025, coinciding with the launch of passenger services on the newly completed 8-km Byford rail extension.

The Metronet Byford rail extension project has delivered a brand-new train station in Byford, a new elevated station in Armadale, and removed nine pedestrian and road-level crossings providing a much-improved connection to our public transport system as the local population continues to grow.
The south extension of Armadale Line connects inhabitants of Byford and the wider Serpentine-Jarrahdale area to the Perth CBD on a seamless 46-minute train journey.
“The reopening of the Armadale Line and its much-anticipated extension will provide safer and more efficient public transport connections for the Perth community. Significant works have been carried out with the removal of level crossings and installation of a new dual-rail track to futureproof the Armadale Line, allowing for faster and more reliable train journeys, said the Federal Infrastructure and Transport Minister Catherine King.
The project brings development opportunities in the Armadale and Byford town centres, providing new and safe connections around the stations.
The full reopening of Armadale Line has been jointly funded by the Federal Government of Australia and the Western Australia’s Government. The project was a major construction feat with the delivery of 8 km of new double-track section, including 22,000 sleepers, 40,000 tonnes of crushed rock, 430 masts, and 72 km of overhead wiring. The project has also supported an estimated 4,200 jobs.
Two new over-rail bridges were also built at Thomas Road and Eleventh Road, while 8 hectares of new public open space was created through the elevation of the rail line. This open space is also complemented by eight kilometres of new shared paths for pedestrians and cyclists.
The project also included the upgrade of Armadale Line through the renewal of 15 km of track, 25 pedestrian crossings and 10 level corssings.
The new Byford station also includes a new platform servicing the Australind train. The new train is currently undergoing dynamic testing and will return to service in early 2026.
The opening of the Byford rail extension marks the completion of all new Metronet rail lines the Government committed in 2017, with the final Metronet project, the New Midland Station, expected to open in early 2026.
