Ouigo cancels some rail services in Spain

Ouigo España, the Spanish division of the French high-speed train operator, has confirmed the temporary suspension of several daily rail services between Madrid and Andalusia (Seville and Málaga) from January 9 to 22, 2026, following a reassessment of train maintenance requirements, which has reduced the number of units available for commercial operation.

Ouigo explained that this operational adjustment affects eight daily rail services from Friday to Monday and six daily services from Tuesday to Thursday on the Madrid–Seville and Madrid–Málaga high-speed corridors. The company estimates that approximately 15,000 passengers will be affected during this period.

According to the operator Ouigo, the reduction in services is the result of updated maintenance planning carried out at the beginning of 2026, which increased the time required for the overhaul of certain trains and temporarily limited the availability of the rolling stock fleet. Ouigo stressed that it still has enough trains to operate the rest of its scheduled services in Spain, maintaining safety and comfort standards for passengers.

Ouigo stated that affected passengers were informed in advance and offered options to change their tickets free of charge or cancel them with a full refund and compensation, depending on the timing of the adjustment.

Renfe committed to providing rail services on canceled routes

In response to this situation, Spanish national operator Renfe announced the activation of special services on the Southern Corridor to assist people who were unable to travel due to cancellations and suspensions by Ouigo.

To facilitate the mobility of all those affected by these cancellations, Renfe will offer them, from January 9, two special services between Madrid and Seville, operated with Avlo trains, at reduced prices, starting at EUR 7.

Depending on demand, Renfe will increase the capacity of trains on this corridor and, if necessary, will also schedule additional special services to serve passengers affected by cancellations on the Madrid-Málaga route in both directions.

Renfe reminds passengers that, according to the law, if no solution is offered to passengers within 100 minutes of the scheduled departure time, they can seek alternative public transport, such as Renfe, and the company that canceled the service is obliged to reimburse the cost of the ticket purchased.
