OCTA and Metrolink open new San Juan Creek rail bridge

Train services are now running over the newly constructed San Juan Creek Bridge in San Juan Capistrano, marking a key milestone in the Orange County Transportation Authority’s (OCTA) and Metrolink’s joint programme to enhance rail safety and reliability across the region.

Following testing over the weekend, the first passenger trains began using the bridge early on Monday morning. Built immediately adjacent to the previous structure, the new bridge replaces an original span dating back to 1917 and forms an essential link along the Los Angeles–San Diego–San Luis Obispo (LOSSAN) corridor — one of the busiest intercity passenger rail lines in the United States.

“This new bridge represents an important investment in safety and efficiency for the thousands of passengers and freight customers who depend on this rail line every day,” said Doug Chaffee, OCTA Chair. “By replacing an ageing structure that has served the region for more than a century, we’re ensuring that train service through this area remains reliable and resilient for decades to come.”

Modern design for long-term reliability

The new bridge was completed after approximately 17 months of construction and represents a total investment of around $65 million, funded through a combination of Measure M — Orange County’s half-cent sales tax for transport improvements — and additional state and federal support.

Designed to meet modern engineering and safety standards, the bridge incorporates upgraded foundations and improved flood protection for the San Juan Creek channel below. These enhancements will strengthen the resilience of the corridor and reduce long-term maintenance requirements, ensuring smoother and safer rail operations for both passenger and freight services.

Replacing a century-old landmark

The original 1917 bridge, which served Southern California’s rail network for more than 100 years, will now be dismantled and removed. Demolition work is scheduled to take place in spring 2026, following the successful transition of all train traffic to the new structure.

The San Juan Creek Bridge Replacement Project forms part of OCTA’s broader strategy to modernise and maintain Orange County’s rail infrastructure, ensuring the network remains safe, efficient and environmentally sustainable.

Supporting one of America’s busiest rail corridors

The LOSSAN rail corridor, stretching from San Luis Obispo through Los Angeles to San Diego, serves millions of passengers annually and provides a critical freight connection along California’s coast. The completion of the new bridge marks another key step in the ongoing effort to strengthen and adapt the region’s rail infrastructure to meet future transport and climate resilience demands.
