ÖBB to modernise entire Railjet fleet by 2031

ÖBB has announced a comprehensive modernisation programme for its existing fleet of Railjet trains, aiming to deliver enhanced passenger comfort, modern design, and upgraded onboard technology. The project marks a significant step in aligning the current Railjet fleet with the standards of the new generation of high-speed trains.

Launched over 15 years ago, the Railjets have now reached the halfway point of their intended 30-year service life. To maintain a high level of travel comfort and operational efficiency, ÖBB will refurbish all 60 existing Railjets by the end of 2031.

The first upgraded trainset is scheduled to enter passenger service on the southern route in December 2025, coinciding with the launch of the Koralmbahn. The trains will continue to operate on ÖBB’s international Railjet routes across Austria, Germany, Switzerland, Hungary, Slovakia, the Czech Republic and Italy.

Railjet modernisation: Upgrades for passengers and crew

As part of the refurbishment, both First and Second Class seats will be replaced with newly designed models, and Business Class seats will also be renewed.

Additional improvements include full-length seatbacks for enhanced privacy, updated floor coverings, larger folding tables, footrests, and grab handles. The new design will feature a warm, modern wood aesthetic in line with the look and feel of the latest Railjet generation.

Upgrades will also include the installation of an advanced passenger information system, improved stroller storage, and vending machines for convenient access to drinks and snacks. For ÖBB onboard staff, the trains will be equipped with additional compartments and improved working areas to facilitate daily operations.

“The upgrade of our Railjets is an important step in modernising the existing fleet and adapting it to the standards of the new generation Railjets. The first upgraded Railjet will make its debut on the southern route with the opening of the Koralmbahn in December 2025.” ÖBB CEO Andreas Matthä commented.
