ÖBB Rail Cargo Group has inaugurated the modernized combined transport terminal in Přerov-Horní Moštěnice, Czech Republic, following 16 months of construction. The terminal’s area has nearly doubled to approximately 36,000 square meters, and its handling capacity for containers and semi-trailers will increase.
ÖBB Rail Cargo Group, the freight division of the Austrian railway company ÖBB, has inaugurated the modernized combined transport terminal in Přerov-Horní Moštěnice, in the Czech Republic.
The work took 16 months, and the project focused on expanding the area, increasing capacity, and modernizing the infrastructure. The terminal thus strengthens its role as a key logistics hub in Central Europe.
The revitalization project was designed to address long-standing capacity issues, particularly the lack of handling space and limited access to certain lines.
Area Nearly Doubled
The terminal’s area has been expanded by approximately 17,100 square meters, reaching about 36,000 square meters. In effect, the total area has nearly doubled.
As part of the modernization, the handling and storage areas were expanded, access to the tracks was improved, and new transshipment equipment was put into operation.
With a capacity of approximately 3,000 TEU, the terminal will enable more efficient freight processing, higher train frequencies, and greater flexibility for rail freight customers.
Přerov, a logistics hub in Central Moravia
The modernized terminal brings benefits to both customers and the region. According to ÖBB Rail Cargo Group, shipment processing will become faster and more reliable, and handling capacity for containers and semi-trailers will increase significantly.
At the same time, Přerov is being established as a distribution hub in Central Moravia, with efficient connections to the rail and road networks.
ÖBB Rail Cargo Group plans to develop new rail connections to the ports of Koper in Slovenia and Rijeka in Croatia, as well as to strengthen intermodal routes in Central Europe. The terminal is also set to be integrated into Eurasian rail connections via Budapest.
The expansion of the terminal area also allows for the handling of semi-trailers, which enhances the terminal’s role in combined transport.
Christoph Grasl, a member of the ÖBB Rail Cargo Group board, emphasized the terminal’s importance for the development of combined transport in the region.
“We see Přerov as a central hub for the further development of combined transport in Central Europe. Our long-term goal is to build a robust and flexible logistics infrastructure that offers our customers stability, even during periods marked by fluctuations in global supply chains,” said Christoph Grasl.
Investment in Rail Freight Transport
ÖBB Rail Cargo Group is continuing a decades-long logistics tradition in Přerov-Horní Moštěnice. The site originated from the former ČSKD-INTRANS terminal of the 1970s, which was one of the most important hubs for Czechoslovak combined transport during the ČSD era.
While many similar terminals disappeared after 1990, the site in Přerov remained operational thanks to its strategic location and gradually developed into an important intermodal hub in Moravia.
The terminal’s expansion contributes to shifting freight transport from road to rail and is co-financed by the European Union.
By increasing the availability of combined transport services, the project aims to reduce CO₂ emissions and relieve pressure on heavily used road infrastructure. The modernized terminal thus reinforces the role of rail freight as a less polluting alternative in European logistics.
