The Austrian railway company, ÖBB, has launched an extensive maintenance program on the Brenner railway line, taking advantage of the temporary closure caused by work being carried out by the Italian railway infrastructure manager, RFI, at the Brennero/Brenner station and on the southern Brenner Pass.
The work will take place from July 18 to August 1 and will affect both regional and long-distance traffic between Austria and Italy.
During this period, ÖBB will carry out repairs to address frost damage and perform maintenance on the railway infrastructure, while the Italian side will modernize the tracks and railway facilities at Brennero/Brenner Station and on the southern section of the Alpine route.
Rail service will be temporarily replaced by buses
The first phase of the work begins on July 18, when regional train service will be restricted between Gries am Brenner and the Brenner Pass. Since regional trains will not be able to enter the Brennero/Brenner station due to work being carried out by RFI, ÖBB will provide replacement buses between Steinach in Tirol and the Brenner Pass.
In the second phase, which begins on July 23, the work will be extended to the entire section between Innsbruck and the Brenner Pass. Consequently, buses will provide service between Innsbruck Hauptbahnhof and Brennero/Brenner.
In South Tyrol as well, buses will replace regional trains on the Brenner–Brixen (Bressanone) route. Bicycle transport will be available only subject to space, and a minibus shuttle service will be organized for the town of St. Jodok.
In addition, between July 17 and August 1, long-distance trains between Innsbruck and Bolzano (Bozen) will be suspended due to construction work on the southern Brenner Pass. Passengers will be transported by direct buses between the two regional capitals, but bicycle transport will not be possible on these buses.
At the same time, several Railjet trains (RJ 80, RJ 81, and RJ 1281) will be rerouted via the Tauern and Tarvisio lines, starting or ending their routes at Wörgl Hauptbahnhof. As a result, these trains will no longer stop at the stations Jenbach, Innsbruck Hauptbahnhof, Brennero/Brenner, Fortezza (Franzensfeste), Bressanone (Brixen), Bolzano (Bozen), Trento, Rovereto, Verona Porta Nuova, Vicenza, and Padova.
