NextGen Acela to launch on NEC this August

Amtrak will introduce its new NextGen Acela high-speed trains on 28 August 2025, marking a new chapter in rail travel along the US Northeast Corridor. The service will operate between Boston, New York City and Washington, D.C., with an initial fleet of five trainsets.

The launch is the first step in a programme that will see 28 new trains enter service by 2027, offering 27% more seating capacity per departure and expanded weekday and weekend schedules.

NextGen Acela: Enhanced passenger features

The NextGen Acela fleet offers upgraded amenities, including free high-speed 5G-enabled Wi-Fi, individual power outlets and reading lights at each seat. The trains will also feature improved seating and interiors designed to enhance comfort for both business and leisure travellers.

During the transition period, Amtrak will operate both the current Acela trains and the new fleet. Customers can book seats through the Amtrak mobile app, website or at station kiosks, with clear labelling to distinguish NextGen services.

Built in the United States

The new fleet was assembled at Alstom’s facility in Hornell, New York, using components from more than 180 suppliers across 29 states, supporting an estimated 15,000 US jobs.

NextGen Acela is a key element in Amtrak’s wider fleet modernisation strategy, which also includes new Amtrak Airo trains for services such as the Amtrak Cascades and Northeast Regional, as well as updated interiors for long-distance coaches, dining cars, sleepers and lounges.

Amtrak expects all 28 NextGen Acela trains to be in service by 2027, increasing travel options and capacity on one of the busiest passenger rail corridors in North America.
