New BART cars enter services

The California Public Utilities Commission has released the authorization to San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit to put into commercial operation the new Fleet of the Future cars. The Commission gave its approval after a comprehensive testing process.
The new cars will offer BART passengers a quieter and more comfortable ride while expanding the capacity, relieving crowding on the BART system.
The first of 775 new BART train cars entered into service on January 19th. The 21m-long trains have 50 per cent more doors for easier boarding and ¬exiting.
The first car was delivered by Bombardier in March 2016, under a USD 2.5 billion contract signed in 2012. Within the same framework contract, in 2014, BART confirmed a USD 639 million order for 365 additional rail cars from Bombardier. In total, Bombardier has firm orders for 775 cars for BART Fleet of the Future.
According to BART, by the end of this year, at least 230 new cars will enter services, and by the end of 2020, least 610 new cars will be put into commercial operation.
