Munich opens first section of West Tangent Tram

The Munich Transport Company (MVG) has inaugurated the first section of the West Tangent Tram line, after which regular service began between Pasing Bf. and Gondrellplatz.

From 28 February, trams run on the new section between Fürstenrieder Straße and Ammerseestraße every 10 minutes during the day, and every 20 minutes in the evening after 10:00 pm and in the early morning hours.

“The West Tangent Tram is one of Munich’s largest and most important infrastructure projects in recent years. It closes a gap in our transport network, which is heavily oriented towards the city centre. I am pleased that our city has resumed expanding the tram network after a break of almost a decade. The very good standardised assessment of the West Tangent Tram demonstrates significant benefits for the entire city, and especially for the west of Munich,” said Munich Mayor Dominik Krause.

“I am pleased that we can now put the West Tangent Tram, line 14, into operation on its first section, creating an attractive connection along Fürstenrieder Straße between Agnes-Bernauer-Straße and Ammerseestraße. In doing so, we are linking Laimer Platz underground station as well as the Aindorferstraße area to the tram network,” said MVG Director Ingo Wortmann.

The West Tangent Tram line will run for 8.3 km, with the first 1.5 km section between Fürstenrieder Straße and Ammerseestraße served by three stops. These are almost level-access and already designed to accommodate longer trams up to 56 metres in length.

The Tram-Westtangente connects five districts of Munich, running from Romanplatz to Ratzingerplatz and terminating at Aidenbachstraße underground station. The new line links three U-Bahn lines, five tram lines, and the Laim S-Bahn station.

As part of the construction works for the new line, the existing Fürstenrieder Straße stop on line 19, which has been in operation since December 2025, has also been made fully accessible. It has been equipped with a free-standing, highly visible dynamic passenger information system, complete with a voice output function for visually impaired passengers.

The Tram-Westtangente also enhances the urban environment. At most stops, the grassed track and tree plantings create a greener, more pleasant streetscape.

The next construction phases, currently underway, will initially extend the route from Ammerseestraße to Waldfriedhof, and later on to Aidenbachstraße underground station. The opening of these sections is scheduled for 2028.

The new 8.3 km route will feature 17 stops, increasing the tram network, which currently spans 82 km, by around 10%.

In the north, closing the missing section between Fürstenrieder Straße and Romanplatz depends on the completion of the so-called “multimodal tunnel” at Laim S-Bahn station. This structure, located adjacent to the tram route, will also serve pedestrian and cycling traffic and is being built by Deutsche Bahn as part of the second S-Bahn main line project. Here too, the sections are expected to open in 2028.
