Hitachi Rail and Sumitomo Corporation have secured a contract to implement an Automatic Fare Collection (AFC) system on the North–South metro line of the Jakarta MRT network in Indonesia.
The project introduces automated access gates for the first time in the country, enabling contactless payments via bank card and other digital methods.
The project aims to equip 20 stations on the Jakarta MRT North–South metro line with a modern ticketing system designed to improve the passenger experience and the operational efficiency of the urban transit network.
The scope of the project covers the design, supply, installation, testing, and commissioning of a complete account-based ticketing solution for seven new stations along the Jakarta MRT North–South Line, Phase 2, as well as the development of system interfaces and AFC software for thirteen existing stations in Phase 1.
The new system will also be integrated with external payment systems, including major payment gateways and the JakLingko platform (Jakarta’s integrated public transport platform).
First-of-its-kind digital ticketing and contactless payments
The new AFC system will enable post-pay transactions via contactless cards, QR codes, and other digital solutions, offering a faster, more flexible, and fully integrated travel experience. Its implementation sets a new standard for digital fare systems in urban transportation in Indonesia.
As part of the project, Sumitomo and Hitachi Rail will supply fare calculation and payment processing technologies, as well as equipment such as ticket vending machines and automated access gates, including for the new stations being built in the second phase of the Jakarta MRT project.
The initiative is supported by the governments of Japan and Indonesia through funding provided by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) under the STEP economic cooperation program.
Hitachi Rail will act as the system integrator, developing an account-based ticketing solution that is interoperable and connected to external payment platforms, including JakLingko—Jakarta’s integrated public transportation system.
Under this contract, Sumitomo Corporation will supply a fare calculation and payment processing system for a total of 20 stations in Phases 1 and 2A. Additionally, for the seven new stations planned under Phase 2A, the company will supply, install, and test ticket vending machines, automated access gates, and related equipment.
The project reinforces MRT Jakarta’s strategy to develop a smart, sustainable, and fully digitized urban mobility network in one of Southeast Asia’s most dynamic metropolitan regions.
