The Madrid authorities have approved the launch of a tender for a contract worth EUR 123.1 million for the installation of lifts, escalators, and other essential equipment in the new stations on Line 11.
The investment is part of the extension works on the first section, which will connect Plaza Elíptica to Conde de Casal, covering a distance of 6.7 km.
Modern facilities for the new stations
The contract includes:
- 29 elevators;
- 60 escalators;
- fire protection systems;
- catenary and other technological installations that require separate implementation from the civil construction works.
This equipment is essential for the operation of the new stations and to ensure full accessibility, in line with the current standards of the Madrid Metro network.
Progress: two stations are more than 60% complete
The extension of Line 11 is currently 35% complete, but two of the completely new stations have progressed more quickly:
- Comillas – 60%
- Madrid Río – 58%
The project includes a total of five stations:
- Comillas
- Madrid Río
- Atocha
- Palos de la Frontera
- Conde de Casal
The first two are being built from scratch, and the other three will serve as connecting hubs.
A new mobility corridor for Madrid
The extension of Line 11 is a major strategic investment for Madrid’s transport network. The new section will create a cross-city axis that will allow rapid travel between the southern and eastern areas of the capital, avoiding the need to pass through the city center.
The project will bring multiple benefits:
- reduced travel times;
- fewer transfers for passengers;
- decongestion of Line 6 (La Circular), the most used line in the network;
- improved connections for expanding neighborhoods and new urban developments.
The estimated completion date for the works is 2027, given that the project began in November 2022.
TBM Mayrit enters into action in 2026
An important element of the project is the use of the “mole” Mayrit, a new generation TBM, ready to start excavating at a rate of approximately 15 meters per day.
The planned schedule is as follows:
- November 2025 – February 2026: assembly of the tunnel boring machine in Comillas Park (Carabanchel district)
- First quarter of 2026: technical and hydraulic tests
- March 2026: start of tunnel boring
The TBM is already in Madrid and is in the process of being assembled, a stage that can take up to three months.
