LTG Cargo plans new intermodal destinations

intermodal transport network

LTG Cargo is expanding its intermodal transport network, with a stop in Lodz to appear on the Kaunas – Duisburg route, thus the company is expanding its intermodal services by two routes: Kaunas – Lodz and Lodz – Duisburg.

“As logistics change, there is an increasing need to combine different modes of transport to make the best use of their advantages. Intermodal transport, where semi-trailers or containers are transported by rail for long distances and by road for the last mile, solves the problems of driver shortages, road wear and tear, traffic safety and air pollution,” Eglė Šimė, CEO of LTG Cargo, said.

LTG Cargo will carry out several test runs before launching regular services with a stop in Lodz, and the new Kaunas – Lodz and Lodz – Duisburg routes could be launched as early as the beginning of the summer in June.

In the future, LTG Cargo is also expected to provide the first and last mile services in Lodz, i.e. the intermodal arrival and distribution of cargo to final destinations, which are already provided from the terminals in Kaunas and Duisburg. In addition, Lodz is a major rail hub, giving businesses shipping on this route a convenient opportunity to reach both Polish ports and Italy by partner trains.

Since 2022, LTG Cargo started its intermodal transport network expansion with launching services on Kaunas – Duisburg route, following the connection of the Kaunas Intermodal Terminal in Palemonas to the European (1435 mm) track. The intermodal train, which can carry 36 semi-trailers or containers, currently runs three times a week to and from Duisburg.

“LTG Cargo issues annual Green Kilometre Certificates to businesses that use intermodal services, indicating the amount of CO2 that is not released into the air when the cargo is transported by train rather than by road. In 2024, LTG Cargo’s intermodal operations saved more than 30,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide, and the Lodz routes are expected to increase these savings.

LTG Cargo will continue its active integration and expansion in the West. The company provides freight transport, logistics and forwarding, freight loading, locomotive and wagon repair and wagon rental services in Lithuania and abroad. LTG Cargo has established and operates LTG Cargo Polska in Poland and LTG Cargo Ukraine in Ukraine. To develop greener rail freight transport, the company has a team of 1,700 logistics professionals.
