Lisboa Metro to create a circular line starting 2022

The Metropolitan Service of Lisbon (Metropolitano de Lisboa) has presented a project for the extension of the metro network which comprises the creation of two new stations on the Green line, Estrella and Santos, to close the connection with the Yellow Line between Rato and Cais de Sodré. The project is included in the Operational Development Plan which also includes the acquisition of new cars, modifications to the Yellow line and the extension of the Red line.

According to the Operational Development Plan presented this May, by Metropolitano de Lisboa, the tenders for the contracts to carry out this closure of the city center network will begin in the second half of 2018 in order to start the works in 2019, so that the extension and the new stations can be put into service by the end of 2021 or early 2022. The planned investment for the project exceeds EUR 215 million.

The new extension will allow to offer a service of circular line with intervals of three minutes and forty seconds which will contribute to improve the mobility in the city and to encourage the use of the public transport. The operator is evaluating the acquisition of 33 new cars.
