Latvia to use North-South Corridor

Latvia’s President Raimonds Vējonis said that his country intends to use the North-South Transport Corridor and to promote the export of Latvian food products to Azerbaijan. The statement was made during his meeting with President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev, on July 17. Both parties signed a joint declaration on the establishment of a strategic partnership between the two countries. Under the agreement, Latvia and Azerbaijan will cooperate, among other domains, on transport and logistics sector
“The joint declaration on the establishment of a strategic partnership between Latvia and Azerbaijan, as well as cooperation agreements on education, transport, and construction supervision signed today will provide new opportunities for deepening bilateral relations. (…)
We see the potential for developing cooperation in the fields of education and science, IT, pharmacy, and construction,” the President of Latvia said.
In 2016, the trade turnover between Azerbaijan and Latvia totaled USD 8.75 million, the import of Latvian products accounted for USD 7.9 million, while the export of Azerbaijani goods accounted for only USD 0.85 million.
According to the Azerbaijan’s State Customs Committee, the country’s turnover with Latvia amounted to USD 3.72 million in January-May 2017 that is by 11.5 percent more than in the same period of 2016.
