Hitachi Rail wins a EUR 1.5 billion contract in Switzerland

Hitachi Rail has signed a framework agreement with Swiss rail operator SBB to deliver advanced digital signaling technology across Switzerland’s entire rail network as part of a major modernization program estimated to be worth around EUR 1.5 billion.

The project, considered a benchmark for the European railway signaling market, will lead to the replacement of approximately 80% of existing interlocking installations over the next 20 years.

Replacing traditional interlocking with digital solutions

Interlocking technology is designed to prevent conflicting train movements on the railway, ensuring traffic safety. As part of this program, Hitachi Rail will deliver the latest generation of digital interlocking systems, as well as Radio Block Centers (RBCs), which are essential components for implementing a national cab signaling system.

According to the company, the use of digital interlocking systems reduces track infrastructure, lowers maintenance requirements, and improves the environmental performance of the railway system.

Intelligent control of installations, in accordance with the EULYNX standard

Hitachi Rail’s digital signaling solution will integrate intelligent object controllers, developed in accordance with the new European EULYNX standard, for the control and monitoring of switches, signals, and line sections.

In addition to controlling field equipment, these controllers can collect and transmit asset status data, including data from sensors.

This functionality makes the technology a key element in the implementation of predictive maintenance, helping to increase reliability and reduce operating costs.

Long-term contract with maintenance included

The framework agreement has an initial term of ten years, with the option to extend it three times, each extension lasting five years. The contract also includes twenty-five years of maintenance and support services for the delivered systems.

SBB estimates the total investment for this modernization program at approximately one and a half billion EUR.

“Hitachi Rail will work with its partners to usher in a new era of rail transport in Switzerland. The introduction of digital centralisation is a technological milestone that not only increases the efficiency and sustainability of the Swiss rail network, but also strengthens Switzerland’s position as an international leader in mobility. We look forward to contributing our expertise and innovation to this programme,” said Kurt Sauerwein, Managing Director of Hitachi Rail in Switzerland.
