Hitachi Rail has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Prasarana, Malaysia’s leading public transport operator, to deepen their long-standing collaboration in rail operations, technology, and workforce development.
The agreement aims to advance the use and maintenance of SelTrac Communications-Based Train Control (CBTC) signalling technology while also supporting the development of local talent and innovation within the rail sector. The partnership aligns with Malaysia’s National TVET Policy 2030, which focuses on equipping the workforce with technical and vocational skills relevant to industry needs.
“Hitachi Rail is proud to reaffirm its commitment to Malaysia’s strategic goals for skill development and innovation,” said Ziad Rizk, Managing Director of the Urban Rail Signalling business at Hitachi Rail. “Our 30-year partnership with Prasarana and deployment of our SelTrac™ technology has been instrumental in enhancing rail operations, and we look forward to elevating Malaysia’s rail industry.”
Since 1998, Hitachi Rail has been integral to the development of Malaysia’s urban transit systems. The company introduced its SelTrac CBTC system on the Kelana Jaya Light Rail Transit (LRT) line and has since contributed to signal upgrades on the monorail, Ampang, and Kelana Jaya lines. More recently, Hitachi Rail commissioned the Integrated Control Centre (ICC), which now oversees operations for three major lines, and enhanced safety systems on the Ampang Line.
The partnership between Hitachi Rail and Prasarana also encompasses collaboration on advanced digital tools for predictive maintenance, R&D initiatives in sustainable railway engineering, and opportunities to pursue projects in both domestic and international markets. Through its Rail Centre of Excellence in Batu Gajah and the Kelana Jaya Line upgrade project, Hitachi Rail continues to invest in the country’s rail infrastructure and technical capacity.
