HDR to elaborate Seattle – Tacoma LRT study

Engineering company HDR will provide planning, preliminary engineering, environmental and public involvement services for Tacoma Dome LRT extension in Washington.
The new LRT section is the final extension needed to complete light rail service between Seattle and Tacoma. The project envisages the construction of a 15.6-km section, served by 4 new stations, and a new operations and maintenance facility. The line will offer public transport services by connecting the cities of Federal Way, Milton, Fife, Tacoma and the Puyallup Tribe of Indians Reservation.
“With four new LRT stations, Sound Transit and the cities in the corridor will have a once-in-a-generation opportunity to transform station areas into vibrant new station-communities. While Sound Transit has defined a representative alignment and general station locations, we will help them refine both in ways that benefit these cities for generations,” HDR Project Manager Sharon Kelly said.
At the end of December, Sound Transit Board approved the Tacoma Dome link extension, establishing a USD 125.7 million budget for preliminary engineering for the project and giving the green light to extend light rail further south from South King into Pierce County, one of the most rapidly growing areas in the region. In a related action, the Board executed a USD 10.3 million consultant contract with HDR Engineering, Inc. to begin project development services.
This year, Sound Transit will launch technical work on the project, which will include the community engagement. The Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) will be completed by mid-2019 and transport services are scheduled to begin by 2030.
