Hamburg to host “Intermodal Europe”

On 29 November – 2 December 2011, Hamburg will host the event “Intermodal Europe” aimed at bringing into discussion the development of the transport and logistics sector. The event features an exhibition, 92% of the exhibition hall being already booked by 140 companies which will exhibit their latest technological solutions contributing to the development of the transport sector. The event will also include the presentation of a study containing the latest news on EU ports and road congestion through the TIGER Project. The introduction of new giant container vessels, capable of carrying huge amounts of cargo has forced ports to invest heavily in upgrading their facilities to handle increased volume. Unfortunately, the road and rail networks are still awaiting for the financing necessary for the extension and modernisation of the infrastructure. This has created one of the greatest challenges in the logistics segment. Franco Castagnetti, President of the TIGER project, commented: “We are committed to achieving a more sustainable and competitive cargo mobility system in Europe and the reduced traffic flow caused by the poor global economy provides an ideal window to implement improvements. This will in turn create a more competitive environment in European industry and lead to increased freight mobility. Organisations need to improve the areas which will directly impact the efficiency of the logistics network throughout Europe”.
