Greater Anglia to be nationalised this October

Greater Anglia, the UK’s most punctual train operator and current holder of the Train Operator of the Year title, will transfer to public ownership on 12 October 2025, the Department for Transport has confirmed.

The operator said it is committed to ensuring a smooth transition, with plans and expertise already in place. Until then, it will continue providing safe and punctual services across East Anglia, building on its recent performance record.

Greater Anglia has topped UK punctuality tables for the second consecutive year, while also recording strong growth in passenger demand. In 2024/25, it recorded 82 million journeys, making it the fastest-growing train operator in London and the South East.

Since its franchise began in 2012, Greater Anglia has delivered a GBP 2 billion investment programme, introducing a completely new fleet and improving service quality across the network. The company has also worked with local stakeholders to enhance its environmental and community impact.

The Department for Transport has confirmed there will be no immediate changes for passengers. Timetables, ticketing, and station facilities will remain the same, and all employees will transfer to the new public operator.

“I’m very proud of what we’ve achieved in East Anglia over the past 13 years—modernising the fleet, raising standards and working with the community. As we move into public ownership, we remain focused on delivering outstanding service for passengers,” Martin Beable, Managing Director of Greater Anglia, said.
