The Škoda Group has officially presented the first fully modernized M31 tram to local operator Västtrafik in Gothenburg.
The event marks an important step in the extensive fleet modernization program, with the tram having already passed all certification and operational tests and carrying its first passengers.
The vehicle has entered commercial service through local operator Göteborgs Spårvägar, while other units are currently being modernized at the Škoda Group factory in Ostrava, Czech Republic.
“Seeing the first modernized M31 tram here in Gothenburg, ready for service, is a moment of pride for our teams. Today marks an important step for public transport in Gothenburg. With the first modernized M31, we are offering more comfort, extended service life, and greater reliability for passengers throughout the city,” said Martin Bednarz, director of the Škoda Group production facility.
79 trams modernized for another 15 years of service
The contract covers the complete modernization of 79 M31 trams, vehicles originally manufactured in the 1980s. The main objective is to extend their service life by at least 15 years, while increasing comfort, reliability, and working conditions for drivers.
The process includes:
- complete renovation of the interior and exterior of the vehicle;
- a refreshed design, aligned with the current look of the Gothenburg fleet;
- new seat upholstery;
- modernized lighting;
- improved heating and air conditioning systems;
- a redesigned access ramp to facilitate boarding for people with reduced mobility.
Major technical upgrades for superior reliability
In addition to the visible improvements, the trams also benefit from substantial technical upgrades. The electro-hydraulic braking system has been completely replaced, and the compressed air door opening mechanisms have been replaced with modern, electric units.
The driver’s cab has been completely redesigned to provide an ergonomic space, improved visibility, and modern instruments that meet current safety and comfort standards for operating personnel.
“We are investing in the future of tram transport by completely modernizing the 79 M31 vehicles—almost everything is new. The refreshed design, increased comfort, and modern driver’s cab allow these beloved trams to serve the city for many years to come. It’s a win-win for both passengers and drivers,” said Sara Ihrlund, Head of Rail Services and Deliveries at Västtrafik.
A sustainable project that reduces environmental impact
The Gothenburg tram modernization program is a strategic investment in sustainable urban transport. Instead of purchasing completely new vehicles, Västtrafik and the Škoda Group opted to renew and extend the life of existing vehicles.
This approach reduces material consumption, minimises environmental impact and preserves an important part of the city’s public transport visual identity, as the M31 is a well-known and appreciated model in the local community.
More trams are already being modernized in Ostrava, and deliveries will continue over the next few years as Škoda Group completes work on the entire M31 fleet.
