GBRf to haul Belmond’s new luxury sleeper

GB Railfreight (GBRf) has announced a new long-term partnership with luxury hospitality brand Belmond to operate the Britannic Explorer, the first high-end sleeper train service to travel across England and Wales. The new service, launching in summer 2025, will offer three-day itineraries to some of Britain’s most scenic destinations.

Under the agreement, GBRf will provide traction and support services for the train, building on its existing relationship with Belmond, which began in 2015 with the Royal Scotsman. The partnership represents a significant expansion of luxury rail travel in the UK.

The Britannic Explorer will offer routes from London to Wales, Cornwall, and the Lake District, with a fourth itinerary expected to be added in 2026. The train will feature 18 elegantly designed cabins, including three Grand Suites that offer ensuite bathrooms, double beds, and personal butler service.

A hallmark of the service is its emphasis on slow, immersive travel through the British countryside. Guests will enjoy Michelin-starred dining curated by chef Simon Rogan, whose restaurants collectively hold eight Michelin stars and two Green stars. An onboard spa will offer additional luxury, allowing guests to unwind while travelling through valleys, coastlines, and mountains.

In line with Belmond’s sustainability goals, the Britannic Explorer—along with the Royal Scotsman—will transition to bi-mode Class 99 locomotives in 2027. These hybrid engines, capable of running on electricity and renewable fuels, will replace the current Class 66s and support the operator’s objective of reducing emissions while maintaining performance.

John Smith OBE, Chief Executive Officer at GB Railfreight, welcomed the collaboration:

“Belmond continue to redefine luxury travel, and I am so proud that we will be hauling the marvellous Britannic Explorer. There is no better way to explore the British countryside than by rail – in a digital age, sometimes we all need to switch off, sit back and enjoy your surroundings. The cabins look absolutely exquisite and I know many customers will be keen to be on the first train this summer!”

Gary Franklin, Senior Vice President of Trains and Cruises at Belmond, commented:

“In the year that the UK celebrates 200 years of railways, Belmond are delighted to be launching the Britannic Explorer, England and Wales’ first luxury sleeper. To be working with GB Railfreight who have worked tirelessly with us to deliver exciting new itineraries to parts of England and Wales sometimes hard to reach shows the strength of the partnership between the two companies.”

The Britannic Explorer adds to Belmond’s portfolio of iconic rail experiences and reflects growing demand for high-end leisure rail travel within the UK. The train’s design features classic British aesthetics and bespoke craftsmanship, offering passengers a unique way to experience the landscape in comfort and style.
