GBP150 million to modernize the UK’s largest tram network

Greater Manchester authorities will launch a major program of works this year to modernize the Metrolink tram network, the largest tram network in the UK. The total investment is estimated at GBP 150 million, according to Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM).

The program aims to increase the capacity, reliability, and resilience of the network by modernizing the infrastructure and rolling stock and expanding the workforce.

The works will take place in several areas of the city.

Temporary closures on some lines

During the works, scheduled from spring to fall, some tram lines will be temporarily closed.

The first major works will take place over the Easter weekend, between April 3 and 6, in the Trafford Bar and Deansgate-Castlefield areas, as part of preparations for the complete replacement of sections of tram track later in the year.

During this period: To compensate for the disruptions, the operator will introduce a new temporary timetable, and trams will run at approximately 15-minute intervals, with 7.5-minute frequencies during peak hours on the busiest lines.

  • The Altrincham, Eccles, and Trafford Park lines will be temporarily suspended.
  • The East Didsbury and Airport lines will only run as far as Firswood station.

Recruitment and tram modernization

In parallel with the infrastructure works, the authorities will also run a recruitment and training campaign for new tram drivers to increase the operational capacity of the network.

In addition, trams that are temporarily out of service will be cleaned, maintained, and modernized in an effort to improve reliability and passenger comfort.

“Keeping the network safe, reliable, and ready for the future is our top priority. This year’s program of works is one of the most extensive ever undertaken and will strengthen the entire network—the infrastructure, trams, and staff,” said Ian Davies, Metrolink network director at TfGM.
