Florida’s Brightline rail service begins

Privately owned passenger rail operator Brightline announced the start of a new rail service between West Palm Beach and Fort Lauderdale at speeds of up to 130 km/h. Brightline intends to extend service later this year to Miami and by 2020 to run up to 16 daily round trips between Miami and Orlando International Airport, with stops in Fort Lauderdale and West Palm Beach.
Each of Brightline’s five diesel-electric trains consists of two locomotives and four passenger cars and can hold about 240 riders. The trains feature a variety of amenities, including retractable platforms that facilitate easy boarding, bike racks, wide aisles and free wireless Internet.
Initial service will include 10 daily round trips on weekdays and nine on weekends, but schedules will vary day-to-day. The company anticipates it will provide about 5.4 million rides annually once full service is up and running.
