First new Great Eastern Main Line station in a century opens

The first new train station on the Great Eastern Main Line in more than 100 years has officially opened, as Beaulieu Park Station in North Chelmsford, UK, begins operations ahead of schedule. The landmark GBP 175 million project represents a significant boost to local connectivity and regional development, creating a new transport hub to serve thousands of residents and commuters.

Construction of the station began in March 2023, led by Murphy as Network Rail’s principal contractor. Originally expected to complete in 2026, strong progress meant the project was delivered ahead of schedule, marking one of the most ambitious infrastructure achievements in Essex in recent years.

“The early completion of such a complex project – encompassing railway systems, highways, and the station building – is a testament to the collective expertise of all stakeholders,” said Nick Fletcher, UK Managing Director for Murphy. “At Murphy we are committed to improving life by delivering world-class infrastructure, and we hope this station benefits passengers for many years to come.”

A milestone for the Great Eastern Main Line

The opening marks the first new station on the Great Eastern Main Line for more than a century, coinciding with the 200th anniversary of the railway in the UK.

“Today marks the first time a new station has opened on the Great Eastern Main Line in over a century,” said Katie Frost, Network Rail’s Route Director for Anglia. “And to do this in the 200th anniversary of the railway shows how relevant it still is to the millions of passengers who use it each year.

“It’s taken a lot of hard work and dedication by our partners at Essex and Chelmsford working with the rail industry and our delivery contractor, Murphy, to open this new station. And it shows how the public and private sector can work together to create the transport infrastructure necessary to serve a new community.”

The new Beaulieu Park Station was officially inaugurated by Rt. Hon. Kemi Badenoch, MP for North West Essex, and Lord Hendy CBE, Minister for Rail, who unveiled a plaque commemorating the opening during a ceremony celebrating the station’s completion.

Supporting new homes and sustainable growth

Located in the heart of the Beaulieu and Channels neighbourhoods in north Chelmsford, the station will serve as the primary rail link for a new garden community of up to 10,000 homes. Of these, more than 4,000 already have planning permission, with nearly 2,000 built to date.

Operated by Greater Anglia, Beaulieu Park Station provides residents with fast connections to London Liverpool Street in around 40 minutes and to Colchester in 25 minutes. The project is expected to ease congestion at Chelmsford’s main station, while reducing car journeys into the city centre through improved local access.

The site features two car parks with over 700 spaces, extended bus connections, and enhanced walking and cycling routes to encourage sustainable travel. The surrounding area is already supported by Beaulieu Parkway, a new road linking the development to the A12, which opened two years earlier.

Backed by partnership and investment

The GBP 175 million scheme was made possible through a wide-ranging partnership between Homes England, Essex County Council, Chelmsford City Council, the South East Local Enterprise Partnership, and housing developers Countryside (part of the Vistry Group) and L&Q.

Funding has enabled the creation of a modern, accessible station equipped with lifts, waiting areas, cycle storage, and secure facilities, designed to meet the needs of both local residents and commuters.

“I’m so grateful for the patience our customers have shown us while we’ve been busy delivering this fantastic new transport hub,” Frost added. “Thank you to everyone that has been with us on this journey to build and open Beaulieu Park Station.”

The new station complements the ongoing development of the Chelmsford Garden Community, a key part of Essex’s long-term growth strategy. The area will eventually include shops, health services, schools and community facilities, alongside transport infrastructure designed to promote sustainable travel and economic opportunity.

Boosting regional mobility and opportunity

Beaulieu Park Station forms a central part of Chelmsford’s future transport network, helping to reduce road congestion, expand rail capacity, and support the area’s growing housing and employment base. It also reflects wider ambitions under Essex County Council’s integrated transport strategy, aimed at aligning development with rail accessibility.

By offering improved access to employment hubs across the region, including London, Stratford and Colchester, the new station is expected to stimulate investment and support economic development throughout North Essex.

For Network Rail and its partners, the project also showcases how collaboration between public authorities, developers and industry can deliver large-scale infrastructure efficiently and ahead of schedule.

“The successful completion of Beaulieu Park Station demonstrates what can be achieved when public and private partners work together towards a shared vision,” said Fletcher. “It sets a positive precedent for future projects designed to enhance mobility, sustainability and regional growth.”
