Expanded Innsbruck train maintenance facility opens

ÖBB has opened the final expansion of Innsbruck train maintenance facility following an investment totalling EUR 70 million and the creation of 50 new skilled jobs.

Innsbruck train maintenance facility

The newly built 285-metre-long maintenance hall houses six tracks of which three for long-distance trains such as Railjet and Nightjet, and three for regional trains like the Cityjet. The maintenance is carried out efficiently as long-distance trains are serviced overnight, while regional trains are maintained during off-peak hours, ensuring maximum availability and minimal downtime.

The workshop was designed according to the latest technical and ergonomic standards. New vehicles, technologies and maintenance concepts are all integrated – with one clear goal: to keep trains in top condition and ready for operation.

“Our workshop in Innsbruck is perfectly suited to the new trains in Tyrol and enables us to carry out complete maintenance during schedule downtimes. In other words, we service our trains when they’re not needed for operation. Our experts give their best every day – 365 days a year – to ensure passengers reach their destinations safely, quickly, and comfortably,” said TS Managing Director Ralf Mair.

The expansion of the maintenance centre is creating around 50 high-quality new jobs. In total, approximately 130 employees will now work at the Innsbruck train maintenance facility in highly skilled roles, and demand continues to grow. The site also hosts a state-of-the-art training centre for around 150 apprentices across seven trades, underlining ÖBB’s long-term commitment to training and securing the industry’s future.

Sustainability was a key priority in the expansion. The new workshop features resource-efficient materials, such as timber roof beams, and innovative door sealing systems, including air curtains and inflatable seals, which reduce heat loss when doors are open – saving significant heating energy in the large halls.

A photovoltaic system is already in operation on the roof, and a second one will follow by the end of 2026. Together, these systems will produce around 520 MWh of electricity per year – enough to power approximately 130 average households, allowing the site to generate clean electricity locally and contribute to Austria’s energy transition.

The modernisation and expansion of ÖBB Technische Services (TS) in Innsbruck is one of the largest projects in the history of ÖBB Technische Services.

Thanks to this investment, Innsbruck train maintenance facility for regional and long-distance trains becomes a key maintenance hub for Western Austria. The ÖBB Technische Services (TS) in Innsbruck is “a key logistics location for regional and international passenger rail. With this new workshop, we ensure around-the-clock maintenance to keep more trains available for our passengers,” said Klaus Garstenauer, Board Member of ÖBB-Personenverkehr AG.

The entire rebuild was carried out while the site remained fully operational.
