European funding for an intermodal terminal in Ruse

The Bulgarian Ministry of Transport and Communications has approved European funding for the construction of an intermodal terminal in Ruse. The total value of the project is nearly EUR 56.5 million.

The investment is being made under the 2021-2027 Transport Connectivity Program, with non-reimbursable funding from the European Regional Development Fund amounting to over EUR 46.8 million.

The new intermodal terminal in Ruse will be built on the site of the former Ruse East marshalling yard and will include the construction of a new seven-track station, the restoration of the rail connection to the Danube Bridge, and a new road access from the city’s North Industrial Zone.

The terminal will include administrative buildings, loading and unloading platforms, a customs point, storage facilities, parking lots, and green areas.

“With the third bridge over the Danube, which will also be near Ruse, and the construction of the intermodal terminal, the city is consolidating its position as a key transport hub for northeastern Bulgaria. Combined with the modernization and increased capacity of the Ruse–Varna railway line, this will provide the most direct rail connection for freight flows from the East and the Black Sea region on the Danube to Central and Western Europe,” said Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport and Communications Grozdan Karadjov.

This month, Bulgaria’s railway infrastructure manager, NRIC, will launch a public tender for the design and construction of the intermodal terminal. After completion of the works, the operation of the facility will be entrusted to a private operator.

Under the Operational Program “Transport and Infrastructure” 2014-2020, Bulgaria has obtained ERDF funding of EUR 1.7 million for technical assistance for the project, which has a total value of over EUR 2.4 million.

An intermodal terminal in Ruse is a strategic project for the development of transport infrastructure in north-eastern Bulgaria. By combining rail and road transport in a single logistics hub, it will facilitate freight flows from the Black Sea region and Eastern Europe to Central and Western Europe, reducing transit times and transport costs. The terminal will also contribute to the decarbonization of mobility by promoting rail transport over road vehicles and will support the economic development of the city of Ruse, strengthening it as a regional logistics and commercial center. In addition, modern facilities, including connections to the Danube bridge and road access from the northern industrial area, will ensure efficient freight transport management, integration with the river port, and increased competitiveness for Bulgaria in international logistics chains.
