Europe, the largest market for digital train control and signalling

Europe is currently the world’s largest market for digital train control, signaling, and safety systems, ahead of China, amid growing pressure to modernize aging rail infrastructure. This is shown by a study published by SCI Verkehr, according to which the European market is benefiting from massive investments in modernization, the replacement of outdated equipment, and digitization.

According to SCI Verkehr, the global market for CCS technologies—control, command, and signaling—is estimated at approximately EUR 20 billion, and nearly half of this amount is accounted for by Europe.

Unlike China, where a significant portion of the market is still driven by new infrastructure projects, in Europe the main driver is modernization of the existing network. 90% of the European signaling and safety market is related to modernization and maintenance, compared to 10% for new infrastructure.

ETCS, digital signaling, and FRMCS are driving the European market

SCI Verkehr indicates that the European market will continue to grow strongly until 2030, driven by technologies such as ETCS, digital signaling, and FRMCS, the future European railway communication system. At the same time, the study notes that interoperability and harmonization of safety systems remain challenging, and ETCS implementation has been repeatedly delayed in several countries.

For Europe’s complex rail networks, the long-term maintenance of old infrastructure is becoming increasingly costly, and digital modernization is seen as the necessary solution for both increasing capacity and reducing costs.

China remains very strong in Asia

While Europe leads globally in terms of total market size, China clearly dominates the Asian region, accounting for over 65% of the regional volume, driven by the expansion of high-speed and metro networks, as well as by digitization and automation.

SCI shows that the Chinese government is strongly pushing investments in signaling, communications, and smart technologies for rail transport, including 5G-based systems.

Train control remains the key segment

Globally, the most important category of CCS products is train control systems, which account for 40% of the market. The study also shows that new generations of systems—such as ETCS and CBTC—are driving growth in other segments, including digital signaling and railway communications, as networks transition to a higher level of automation.
