Warsaw East Station (Warszawa Wschodnia) is preparing to enter a new phase of development with the launch of one of the most significant railway projects in Poland in recent years.
Located on the capital’s main railway hub and one of the busiest stations in the country, Warszawa Wschodnia represents a strategic point for both national traffic and international connections. Every day, nearly 1,000 trains pass through the station, including 279 long-distance services and 673 metropolitan and regional trains. With such a high volume of traffic, the station requires a comprehensive transformation to become a key pillar of mobility in the Warsaw metropolitan area and a strategic node of the Polish rail network.
In this context, the railway infrastructure manager, PKP Polskie Linie Kolejowe (PKP PLK), has signed a contract with Torpol worth approximately EUR 706.4 million (PLN 3 billion) for the modernisation of Warsaw East Station and Warszawa Stadion station (located about 600 metres from Warsaw East). The tender was launched in August 2025 with a budget of EUR 942 million (PLN 4 billion), and in March Torpol was selected as the contractor.
Works will commence in December 2026 and are scheduled to continue until the end of 2029, benefiting from European funding through the European Funds for Infrastructure, Climate and Environment (FEnIKS) programme.
“Following the modernisation of Warszawa Zachodnia (Warsaw West Station), the time has come to upgrade the second-largest station in the capital – Warszawa Wschodnia (Warsaw East Station). At the same time, we are implementing investments along the line to Otwock, consistently developing the railway infrastructure of the Warsaw agglomeration. Our aim is to provide a modern and efficient transport system for the capital and for the whole of Poland,” said Dariusz Klimczak, Minister of Infrastructure.
A station prepared for growing traffic
The modernisation of Warsaw East Station will completely transform passenger infrastructure. All seven platforms will be rebuilt, covered, and raised to a standard height to facilitate access to trains. A new passenger information system will also be installed, based on modern electronic displays and advanced public address systems.
The project includes the modernisation of over 46 km of railway lines, the construction of 57 km of new overhead contact line, and the installation of 170 turnouts. In addition, seven railway viaducts will be rebuilt and a new Local Traffic Control Centre will be constructed, equipped with modern digital technologies for train traffic management.
A key feature of the project is the construction of a viaduct over 1.6 km in length, which will carry two tracks and connect the station to railway line no. 9, improving traffic flow towards Gdańsk, Olsztyn and Legionowo. This structure will eliminate conflicts between traffic flows and increase the capacity of the capital’s railway hub.
Warsaw East Station as an intermodal hub
The project goes beyond a simple railway upgrade and aims to better integrate various modes of urban transport.
“The modernisation will not only concern the station, but the entire transport hub and its surrounding area. A long-awaited project is the tunnel that will run beneath the lines between Kijowska and Żupnicza streets, connecting the Praga Północ and Praga Południe districts,” said Warsaw Mayor Rafał Trzaskowski.
All three existing underpasses will be rebuilt, and a cycle path will be created in the western tunnel. Access to platforms will be provided via staircases, escalators and lifts. In total, 14 lifts and seven pairs of escalators will be installed at Warsaw East Station.
A new pedestrian passage constructed beneath platform 6 will connect the existing underground tunnels and improve passenger circulation within the complex. At the same time, Warszawa Stadion station will be modernised and will receive an additional platform. A direct connection will also be created to the Stadion Narodowy metro station on line M2, enabling seamless transfers between train and metro without leaving the station.
A coordinated metropolitan-scale investment
The modernisation of Warsaw East Station is the result of a multi-year planning process coordinated with numerous other railway, road and urban projects currently underway in the Polish capital.
Works will be carried out in two main phases. The first phase will focus on platforms 1–4 and infrastructure for long-distance services, while the second phase will cover platforms 5–7 and suburban infrastructure. This approach is intended to minimise disruption to traffic and maintain the highest possible level of passenger services during construction.
Project coordination involves cooperation with municipal authorities (Metro Warszawskie, Tramwaje Warszawskie, PKP SA), utility providers and other investors active in the capital’s railway hub area. According to PKP PLK, this approach will help reduce inconvenience for passengers and ensure more efficient use of financial resources.
The modernisation of Warsaw East Station also represents a key step ahead of the future reconstruction of the cross-city railway line that runs through central Warsaw. In recent years, PKP PLK has laid the groundwork for this project by modernising Warszawa Zachodnia station (Warsaw West), constructing the new Warszawa Główna station, expanding infrastructure at Warszawa Gdańska, and upgrading key systems at Warszawa Centralna (Warsaw Central Station).
The investment is part of a broader programme to develop Poland’s railway infrastructure. In the past six months alone, PKP PLK has signed contracts worth approximately €1.2 billion (PLN 5 billion) for major projects, including key sections of the Podłęże–Piekiełko line and line 201 connecting Bydgoszcz with the Trójmiasto (Tri-City) area, a conurbation formed by the cities of Gdańsk, Gdynia and Sopot. In this context, the modernisation of Warsaw East Station is one of the key investments that will strengthen Warsaw’s position as Poland’s main railway hub and one of the most important transport centres in Central and Eastern Europe.
