EMR’s first Aurora train enters service this December

Transport UK and East Midlands Railway (EMR) have confirmed that the first Aurora train from the operator’s new GBP 400 million fleet will enter passenger service this December, ushering in a new era of Intercity travel across the East Midlands and South Yorkshire.

Built by Hitachi Rail, the 33 new bi-mode Aurora trains will transform travel on the Midland Main Line, offering more seats, improved comfort and accessibility, and enhanced digital connectivity.

Modern, spacious and sustainable

Each train will feature modern interiors, improved air conditioning, plug sockets at every seat, class-leading free Wi-Fi, and clear information screens. The bi-mode units will also take full advantage of the GBP 1.5 billion Midland Main Line upgrade, capable of running under electric power to cut carbon emissions by 66%, delivering quieter and greener journeys.

The new fleet will offer 24% more seats and 19% more legroom per five-car train compared with EMR’s existing Meridian sets. Once all 33 trains are in operation, total capacity across the Midland Main Line will rise by 46%.

Will Rogers, Managing Director of East Midlands Railway, said:

“The introduction of our first Aurora train this December marks the start of a new era for Intercity travel across the East Midlands and South Yorkshire.

“Our Auroras have been designed with our customers at their heart; with more seats, greater comfort, better connectivity and a smoother, quieter ride.

“We and our colleagues at Transport UK are delighted to be delivering a railway that our customers, communities and our employees can truly take pride in.”

Designed for comfort and connectivity

EMR worked closely with Derby-based DG DESIGN to adapt the FISA Lean seat, refining the design to improve comfort while maintaining practicality. Each seat features power and USB outlets, coat hooks, folding tables, and space for cabin-sized luggage underneath.

Passengers will also benefit from a new multi-sim Wi-Fi system that automatically selects the strongest available network, while specially treated glass improves mobile signal strength throughout the train.

Supporting a modernised network

The Aurora fleet is central to EMR’s wider modernisation and sustainability strategy under Transport UK, helping to deliver a more efficient and environmentally friendly rail service.

The introduction of the new trains will coincide with infrastructure upgrades along the Midland Main Line, reducing journey times and improving reliability for passengers travelling between London St Pancras, Leicester, Nottingham, Sheffield, and beyond.
