EIB backs EUR 115 million upgrade for Barcelona Sants

The European Investment Bank (EIB) has signed a EUR 115 million loan agreement with Adif Alta Velocidad (Adif AV) to support the modernisation and expansion of Barcelona Sants, the city’s main intermodal railway station and a key node on the trans-European transport network (TEN-T).

The financing will enable a significant upgrade to the passenger terminal, aiming to meet growing demand for high-speed and commuter services. The project will increase the terminal’s space by 30%, easing congestion and enhancing connectivity with urban transport such as metro, buses and taxis.

The works will involve a full reorganisation of the station building, including the creation of a new boarding hall dedicated to high-speed rail and the expansion of the commuter train area towards Països Catalans square. Improvements will also include upgrades to platform ventilation and evacuation systems, the installation of telecommunications infrastructure, and the restoration of the square to its original design.

The project is expected to reduce queues and optimise mobility flows within the station, delivering a better experience for both long-distance and local passengers. By improving integration with other modes of transport, it also aims to encourage modal shift from road to rail, supporting Spain’s wider sustainability and decarbonisation goals.

The investment aligns with the EIB Group’s commitment to climate action and sustainable transport. At least 50% of the EIB’s annual financing is now directed toward climate-related projects, as part of its Strategic Roadmap for 2024–2027.

The EIB has long supported Spanish railway infrastructure and maintains a close partnership with Adif. Earlier this year, the Bank signed a separate €350 million loan with Adif AV to improve and update both conventional and high-speed rail infrastructure across the country.
