EC confirms the financing of Warsaw-Poznań modernisation

PKP Polish Railway Lines, PKP PLK, has announced that DG MOVE positively evaluated the modernisation of Warsaw-Poznań railway line (E20). In the informing letter to PKP, the EC says that the project, “submitted in the CEF 2015 Calls was positively evaluated by independent experts whose task was to verify the adequacy of individual projects, including cost-benefit analysis. The rail link between Warsaw and Poznan is a very important part of the TEN-T North-Baltic transport corridor, one of the nine priority corridors that set the basics of investments for the coming years, in particular under the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF).”
The information was provided by the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Mobility and Transport on the letter concerning the project of modernisation of the E 20 railway line from Sochaczew to Swarzędz.
In 2015, European Investment Bank considered a EUR 200 million grant to support the modernisation of railway section Sochaczew – Swarzędz, as part of the railway line between Warsaw and Poznan, forming 235 km of the core TEN-T network in Poland. The total cost of the project is estimated at EUR 606 million (PLN 2.6 billion).
Currently, PKP PLK has already completed the first stage of the tendering procedure for the modernization of the route and the second stage of the tender is underway. Contract signing with contractors is planned in the first quarter and works from mid-2017.
The modernisation is estimated to be completed in 2020, allowing trains to run at speeds of 160 km/h.
