A passenger train was struck by a drone in the Zaporizhzhia region in a new attack on Ukraine’s transportation infrastructure. Ukrainian authorities announced that Russian attacks on the railway network are continuing, but train service is being maintained despite the repeated strikes.
According to information provided by the Ukrainian railway company Ukrzaliznytsia, an enemy drone struck a passenger train traveling in the Zaporizhzhia region. Thanks to the rapid response of the company’s monitoring team, passengers and employees were evacuated in time.
According to Ukraine’s Ministry of Community and Territorial Development, there were no fatalities. A train conductor sustained a leg injury and received medical treatment, and authorities quickly arranged alternative bus transportation to the city of Zaporizhzhia for the affected passengers.
In early July, Ukraine announced that Russia had destroyed over 200 locomotives belonging to the railway company Ukrzaliznytsia.
Attacks on Ukrainian railway infrastructure have intensified
The attack in the Zaporizhzhia region is part of a series of strikes on Ukrainian railway infrastructure, which is used for both civilian transport and the logistics necessary for the state’s functioning during the war.
Recently, several regions in Ukraine have reported attacks on railroad lines, stations, and power facilities that support rail transport. The strikes have affected infrastructure near conflict zones, and the Ukrainian railway operator has repeatedly been forced to repair tracks, equipment, and facilities to maintain service.
Ukrainian authorities have stated that Russia has used drones and missiles to attack transportation targets, attempting to disrupt mobility and supply chains within the country. At the same time, the Russian side claims that its attacks target sites it considers part of Ukraine’s military infrastructure.
Despite the constant attacks, Ukraine’s rail transport continues to operate. Ukrzaliznytsia states that its priority remains protecting passengers and employees, maintaining essential routes, and resuming service as quickly as possible in areas where infrastructure has been damaged.
Ukraine’s rail network has become one of the country’s strategic infrastructures since the start of the Russian invasion, serving to transport civilians, facilitate evacuations, deliver humanitarian aid, and maintain connections between war-affected regions.
