Contract to improve the operation of the Zaragoza railway network

Adif has awarded a EUR41 million contract to improve the operation of the Zaragoza railway network, which involves modernizing the electronic centralization facilities on the Embid section of Ribera–Épila, located on the Madrid–Zaragoza–Barcelona line, with Iberian gauge.

The installations are traffic management systems which, through computer equipment, control the installations on the line and train movements in the station area.

The installation of the new traffic management systems will increase the reliability, availability, efficiency, and safety of the installations, as well as the functionality of their associated systems, such as control, command, and signaling, as well as fixed and mobile telecommunications, among others.

As part of the Zaragoza railway network optimization program, work will be carried out on the equipment installed in Embid de la Ribera, Paracuellos-Sabiñán, Morés, Morata de Jalón, Ricla–La Almunia, and Épila, and the adaptations to the new devices will be integrated into the centralized traffic control system in Zaragoza.

Technical operations are also included in the facilities located in Calatayud and Plasencia de Jalón, at the gauge changeover.

The operations will be carried out on the control, command, and signaling installations, train protection systems, level crossings, telecommunications, operational telephony, remote control of auxiliary detection systems, power supply, technical buildings, and protection and security installations.

Validation and verification tests will also be carried out before the new equipment is put into service.

Actions to optimize the Zaragoza rail network

The modernization of the installations will complement the investment to extend the parking lines to 750 m in length at the Morés, Paracuellos-Sabiñán, and Épila stations. The project contributes to the consolidation of the rail freight development strategy in Aragón and is part of the Mercancías 30 program, developed by Adif, which aims to effectively increase the share of rail transport as a central element of multimodal logistics chains.

The extension of these sidings is part of the actions to develop the Algeciras-Zaragoza Rail Motorway, which, with an investment of over EUR 650 million, will be essential for increasing the share of rail transport, both on the central branch of the Mediterranean Corridor and on the Atlantic Corridor. In addition, the project will strengthen intermodality in the Iberian Peninsula for traffic flows between Europe and Morocco.

This strategic action will thus contribute to the decarbonization and sustainability of transport by transferring freight from road to rail, reducing operating costs and achieving higher levels of efficiency and resilience.
