Sibek has been appointed by the Swedish Transport Administration (Trafikverket) to deliver a major contract covering the implementation and commissioning of the ERTMS signalling system in the Malmö metropolitan area, one of the most complex railway modernisation projects in Sweden.
The contract is scheduled to begin at the end of 2026 and will run until 2031, with an option to extend until 2033. The work will be carried out on a cost-reimbursable basis and is considered one of Sibek’s most significant projects over the period.
ERTMS to be deployed across six sub-areas in the Malmö region
The project involves the implementation of the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS Level 2) across the Malmö metropolitan area, covering several rail sub-sections, including:
- Fosieby – a logistics and industrial area in southern Malmö;
- Peberholm – an artificial island in the Øresund Strait between Denmark and Sweden, south-west of Malmö, forming part of the Øresund link (bridge and tunnel between Copenhagen and Malmö);
- Malmö – located in the south-western part of Sweden;
- Arlöv – a locality just north-east of Malmö, close to the urban centre;
- Kävlinge – a town approximately 25–30 km north of Malmö;
- Lund – an important university city about 16 km north-east of Malmö.
According to the company, the project is highly complex as it represents the first deployment of ERTMS in a Swedish metropolitan area. It requires careful coordination of signalling and infrastructure works to minimise disruption to existing rail traffic.

Trafikverket has indicated that ERTMS implementation will proceed at a fast pace across the industry,” said David Berg, CEO of Sibek.
The project is structured in three phases:
- Phase 1: ERTMS installation on the Peberholm–Fosieby line, scheduled for commissioning in 2029;
- Phase 2: ERTMS between Malmö and Arlöv, scheduled for implementation in 2031;
- Phase 3 (optional): section between Lund and Kävlinge, scheduled for implementation in 2033.
