Canadian National Railway Company (CN) has announced plans to invest approximately USD 85 million in Michigan in 2025, as part of its broader capital investment strategy. The funding will go towards essential track maintenance and infrastructure projects aimed at boosting intermodal capacity and improving operational efficiency at key facilities across the state.
Planned upgrades include enhancements to CN’s rail yards in Lansing, Battle Creek, and Flint. These initiatives are designed to improve service reliability, ensure the safe movement of freight, and foster long-term sustainable growth both in Michigan and across CN’s North American network.
“We believe that investing in our network is about building for the future,” said CN President and Chief Executive Officer Tracy Robinson. “Our continued infrastructure investment in Michigan will help strengthen the resiliency and efficiency of our network across the state. Our focus remains on providing exceptional service to our customers and supply chain partners, supporting strong economic growth for North America and across communities where we operate.”
The investment follows CN’s ongoing commitment to its operations in Michigan. In 2024, the railway allocated approximately USD 79 million to similar efforts in the state. That funding supported track maintenance and key infrastructure upgrades, including:
- Over USD 3 million to finalise work on CN’s Flat Rock Transload facility;
- More than USD 5 million to enhance Autoport operations in Lansing;
- Over USD 4 million to support the automotive logistics facility in Lake Orion.
Michigan State Representative Steve Frisbie, who serves on the House Transportation Committee, welcomed the announcement. “As a member of the House Transportation Committee, we focus on a robust freight transportation network across Michigan,” he said. “CN is a key component to moving freight efficiently and safely. I have seen this up close over the years as they move goods through my district in Calhoun County and Battle Creek. Michigan needs a strong rail network, and CN is a leader in making significant investments in the Great Lakes State.”
