CMAP awards Metra USD 104 million for key improvements

Metra has secured more than USD 104 million in grants through the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning’s (CMAP) Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality Improvement (CMAQ) programme. The funding, part of CMAP’s 2026–2030 regional plan, will support three major projects.

The largest share—USD 80 million—will fund the renovation of the historic Van Buren Street Station on the Metra Electric Line. An additional USD 23.7 million will go towards the purchase of three electric switch locomotives, while USD 800,000 is allocated for upgrades at Edgebrook Station on the Milwaukee District North Line.

“We’re grateful CMAP has seen the value of these projects,” said Metra CEO Jim Derwinski. “Each will support CMAQ’s goals to reduce congestion and pollution by strengthening the sustainability of our system.”

U.S. Senator Dick Durbin said, “These investments will improve safety and efficiency while reducing diesel emissions.” Senator Tammy Duckworth added, “I’m proud to help secure funding to modernise the Van Buren and Edgebrook stations and enhance ADA accessibility.”

Representative Mike Quigley highlighted the station’s role in Metra’s transition to electric rail, calling the funding “vital for reliable and eco-friendly service.” Representative Danny K. Davis noted, “These improvements ensure underserved communities benefit from safer and greener transit.”

Renovation of the 129-year-old Van Buren Street Station—damaged by years of water infiltration—will include waterproofing, warming shelters, digital signage, and two new elevators. The USD 134.5 million project is also funded by federal Urbanised Area Formula Funding, the BUILD programme, and local contributions, with work beginning in late 2028.

The new electric locomotives will replace ageing diesel units, lowering emissions across the network. Improvements at Edgebrook Station will enhance accessibility and passenger amenities.
