Brazil to start works on new Transnordestina Railway Lot 8

Brazil’s Minister of Transport, Renan Filho, announced an investment of BRL 1 billion (USD 180.5 million) for the Lot 8 of the Transnordestina Railway, located in the state of Ceará, east of Brazil. The ceremony to sign the service order was held on June 5, 2025

Lot 8 covers the construction of a 46 km-long extension from Quixadá municipality (10.5 km) crossing Itapiúna (21) and Capistrano (12 km) to Baturité (2.5 km), in the state of Ceará.  The project includes the construction of two viaducts, three bridges and four level crossings.

“This is the largest infrastructure project in Brazil’s Northeast and it brings new hope. Once the Transnordestina Railway is completed, Baturité, Piauí, and Ceará will become a region with greater opportunities for growth. We’re going to finish this project,” the minister said, highlighting that “the rapid progress of the works and stated that the railway is expected to be fully completed by 2027.

The Governor of Ceará, Elmano de Freitas, said that the impact of rail transport will be vital for the region including when comparing to the capacity it is providing. “It will be the equivalent of approximately 240 lorries – one after the other, in a single train, bringing to Ceará inputs such as corn, soy, and, perhaps, minerals – attracting a range of investments,” the governor said.

The construction of Lot 8 will boost the development of the region and will create 4,000 jobs in Ceará. The minister also said that the project represents “a new hope for this region” and a driving force for prosperity, which will be reflected in the expansion of businesses and the creation of more jobs and income for the population.

“For every direct job created, 3.5 indirect jobs are generated – it’s fuel stations, hotels, restaurants, pharmacies – the entire local economy benefits and develops,” the CEO of Transnordestina Logística, Tufi Daher, said.

Transnordestina Railway is one of the biggest construction projects in Brazil with a planned length of 1,753 km connecting Piauí state with the Port of Pecém in Ceará passing through Pernambuco.
