Argentina launched works on Belgrano Sur project

Argentina’s Transport Minister Guillermo Dietrich and Buenos Aires Mayor Horacio Rodríguez Larreta launched the construction works on Saenz elevated station, as part of Belgrano Sur project. With the construction of additional 5.6 km, the viaduct will extend rail services from Pompeya (a neighbourhood near Buenos Aires) to Constitución (near Buenos Aires). In addition, the project involves the rehabilitation of 22 railway stations under a USD 47 million investment.
Currently, the rail services cross Matanza, Merlo, Morón and the south of the City of Buenos Aires carrying 50,000 passengers daily, only to Barracas.
“The Belgrano Sur viaduct is part of the largest investment to recover the railway network in the metropolitan area through the RER [Red de Expresos Regionales], and, with this new station the project will become a reality. It is also part of Belgrano Sur transformation and integration into RER through network renewal and electrification,” the Minister said.
Belgrano Sur is one of the three viaducts that will be constructed in Buenos Aires area, together with San Martín railways, with works underway, and Mitre, which will run from Dorrego Avenue in Palermo to Congreso Avenue and Núñez.
These initial works are the essential step for the urban rail transport system Red de Expresos Regionales, involving 20 km of tunnels and underground stations which will transform the travel for 1.5 million passengers. The value of the viaduct project is 1.42 billion pesos (USD 84 million).
“We have 100 km of lines that are very little used. Our vision is to promote the public transport,” the Mayor said.
The project is part of Integral Plan of Works for the Metropolitan Railway Network programme, launched by the Ministry of Transport with a total value of investment of USD 14 billion. The programme will improve the entire rail network and will enable the integration of all lines within Red de Expresos Regionales, the electrification of all railways lines across the network.
