The Gateway Development Commission (GDC), the tripartite public authority established to implement the largest rail project in the U.S. – the Gateway Program – has announced the award of the contract for Package 3 of the Hudson Rail Tunnel project in New Jersey.
The USD 711 million contract was awarded to the consortium formed by Skanska and Creamer Sanzari NJSA JV.
Package 3 covers the surface alignment phase, which is part of the development of the future rail tunnel under the Hudson River that will connect the new tunnel to the existing Northeast Corridor rail network in New Jersey.
Construction work will begin this year and involves the construction of approximately 1.5 miles (2.4 km) of new rail infrastructure, essential for integrating the future tunnel with the existing infrastructure.
The contract includes complex civil engineering works, such as retaining walls, viaducts, bridges, and the relocation of existing infrastructure.
The surface component of the Hudson Tunnel project in New Jersey will build new infrastructure in the Secaucus area to connect the existing Northeast Corridor tracks to the tunnel portal in North Bergen, passing through the Meadowlands region. In total, 2.3 km of new infrastructure is planned, including viaducts, embankments, access roads, and utility relocation work.
The work will take place in close proximity to active railway lines, requiring strict operational coordination and enhanced safety measures, as well as compliance with environmental protection regulations in wetlands.
The Hudson Rail Tunnel is in full swing
Seven of the project’s ten construction packages are already underway or completed, indicating accelerated progress in implementation. Recently, another contract, worth USD 1.29 billion, was awarded for the construction of two 2.2-kilometer tunnels.
The project is a central component of the Hudson Tunnel Program, considered essential for modernizing the rail link between New Jersey and New York.
Authorities have emphasized that this contract represents an important milestone in advancing the Hudson Tunnel project in New Jersey, contributing to the development of a safer, more efficient, and more modern rail corridor between New York and New Jersey.
