Amtrak has awarded design-build contracts and commenced preconstruction work on three rail yard modernisation projects along the Northeast Corridor (NEC), aimed at improving service reliability and enabling more efficient maintenance of its growing fleet.

The investment comes as Amtrak prepares for the arrival of its new Airo trains, which are set to begin operating in 2027. The modernised yards in Boston, New York, and Washington, D.C. will provide the infrastructure needed to maintain the next generation of passenger trains.
Airo fleet and systemwide upgrades
Amtrak President Roger Harris said the projects mark an important step forward in meeting growing demand:
These investments are key to introducing our new Airo trains on the Northeast Corridor beginning in 2027. With ridership and revenue at all-time highs, we’re making great strides to meet this growing demand with new, state-of-the-art trains that will improve service reliability and the overall customer experience.
Each Airo train will operate as a single trainset rather than separate railcars, requiring more advanced maintenance facilities. The upgraded yards will help deliver a consistent system for inspection and servicing, cutting turnaround times while also improving safety and working conditions for staff.
The new works add to similar projects already under way in Philadelphia and Seattle, with further plans for Rensselaer/Albany, New York.
Boston: Southampton Yard
A joint venture between SPS New England and Railroad Construction Company will design and build a new two-track Maintenance and Inspection facility, while also renovating the existing two-track regional Service and Inspection facility into a Service and Cleaning facility. The phased works are scheduled for completion in 2029.

New York City: Sunnyside Yard
In New York, a Scalamandre-Citnalta joint venture has been contracted to upgrade Sunnyside Yard. Plans include a new two-track Maintenance and Inspection facility, six new Service and Cleaning tracks with canopy coverage, and consolidation of commissary, employee space, storage, and parking. The project also involves repairing 11 service platforms and reconfiguring key interlockings. Completion is expected in 2030.

Washington, D.C.: Ivy City Yard
In Washington, a Clark-Herzog joint venture will deliver new and renovated servicing facilities, including three exterior Service and Cleaning tracks with canopy coverage and improvements to two maintenance facilities. Replacement of the yard’s water main infrastructure will also be carried out. Full completion is expected in 2030.
