Amey secures Network Rail ecology contract

Amey, a leading UK provider of engineering, operations, and decarbonisation solutions, has been awarded a place on Network Rail’s Wales and Western Ecology Framework for a period of three years.

Under the framework, Amey will deliver ecology advisory services across the Wales and Western rail network, helping Network Rail maintain environmental compliance and contribute to its biodiversity targets for 2035.

Supporting biodiversity across the rail network

The appointment will see Amey provide a wide range of ecology-based services, including habitat mapping, protected species surveys and assessments, Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) metrics, and the management of invasive and non-native species. The company will also support Network Rail in identifying and protecting areas of conservation value.

Amey will combine its in-house ecological consultancy expertise with its established experience in rail infrastructure management. This includes responding to emergency works, navigating bat licensing requirements for bridge repairs, and considering protected species in emergency events such as landslides.

Digital-led ecological services

As part of the framework, Amey will apply a digital-led approach to service delivery, using advanced tools to improve accuracy and efficiency in ecological assessment. These include the use of night-vision equipment for bat surveys and a customised UK Habitat (UKHAB) data collection and mapping tool.

This integration of digital technology will help classify and track natural habitats more effectively, while also supporting climate resilience projects and sustainability initiatives in collaboration with Network Rail. The approach aligns with Amey’s broader nature-positive strategy, which aims to enhance biodiversity across its operations.

Colin Wood, Managing Director for Amey, said:
“We are pleased to announce our appointment to Network Rail’s Wales and Western Ecology Framework. We recognise the importance of biodiversity across strategic networks, and we are committed to leveraging our expertise and resources to create a more nature-positive and resilient future.

“This framework appointment highlights our commitment to delivering ecology advisory services, and we are very much looking forward to supporting Network Rail in managing and enhancing biodiversity across the rail network.”
