Amey launches Tessera, a new digital signalling system

Amey has launched Tessera, a digital signalling system that replaces traditional technologies and facilitates the modernisation of railway networks.

Built on a modular, future-proof architecture, Tessera connects naturally to legacy, modern, or next-generation systems. According to Amey representatives, durable hardware and robust software ensure reliable operation with minimal maintenance, and the programmable logic controller (PLC) can be configured for specific operational requirements. In addition, Amey offers full lifecycle support – from planning and installation to maintenance.

“At Amey, we are committed to driving innovation and excellence in rail infrastructure. The launch of Tessera is an important milestone in our mission to build safer, smarter, and more sustainable networks. Tessera’s advanced capabilities give customers the confidence to modernize efficiently, ensuring reliability and performance for many years to come,” says Peter Anderson, Managing Director of Transport Infrastructure at Amey.

The system is already being used successfully at Magdalen Road Level Crossing and Transport for Wales’ Walnut Tree depot, and Network Rail has granted it product acceptance. With an estimated operational life of 25 years and full backward compatibility, Tessera delivers significant lifetime savings by reducing maintenance costs, parts requirements, and traffic disruptions compared to traditional solutions.

How Tessera works and what advantages the new signaling system brings

Tessera is based on a programmable logic controller (Commercial Off-The-Shelf – COTS), which replaces conventional mechanical systems and line signals.

The technology uses industrial equipment certified for critical applications, ensuring maximum safety, flexibility, and high reliability.

Modern technology and SIL4 safety

Tessera is based on a PLC from the Himatrix (HIMA) range, widely used in industries where safety is essential. It is certified to Safety Integrity Level 4 (SIL4) – the highest level of safety integrity – ensuring safe operation in complex scenarios.

The PLC receives data from field equipment (e.g., axle counters) and controls signals or track devices according to digital interlocking logic.

Full integration and seamless modernization

A major advantage is full compatibility with old, current, and future systems, allowing operators to modernize gradually without significant traffic disruptions.

The modular architecture allows the solution to be configured for the needs of each line, and the combination of durable hardware and robust software reduces the need for intervention and increases operational reliability.

Digital interface and predictive maintenance

Tessera takes a digital approach, in line with ETCS principles, reducing dependence on physical signals from the ground and facilitating the transmission of information directly to the driver’s cab.

The system includes advanced remote monitoring, rapid diagnostics, and alarm functions that enable a shift from reactive to predictive maintenance, reducing delays and unplanned interruptions.

Energy efficiency and sustainability

Compact components and low power consumption allow Tessera to be powered by off-grid renewable sources such as solar panels or wind turbines. This offers major benefits in remote areas and helps reduce carbon footprint.
