Alstom to modernise Bucharest–Giurgiu railway

Alstom has signed a contract to modernise the second lot of the Bucharest–Giurgiu railway line in Romania, providing electrification and European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS) Level 2 signalling. The project will upgrade 93 kilometres of single track and improve capacity, energy efficiency, and service reliability on Romania’s oldest railway, inaugurated in 1869.

 Bucharest–Giurgiu railway: EUR 450 million project

The EUR 450 million project, in which Alstom’s share is around 25%, has been awarded by CFR SA, Romania’s state-owned infrastructure operator, to the Asocierea RailWorks consortium of Alstom and Arcada, with Arcada overseeing the civil works. The contract includes a 36-month design and execution period.

Gabriel Stanciu, Alstom’s Managing Director for Romania, Bulgaria and the Republic of Moldova, said: “This new contract consolidates Alstom’s leading position on the Romanian railway market, for both signalling and electrification, and will help revitalise a true historical railway milestone. It will be another significant achievement for our growing team of over 230 highly qualified engineers, whose expertise supports both our local and our international projects.”

The contract covers full modernisation of the line between Bucharest North, Jilava, Giurgiu North and the Giurgiu border, including infrastructure and superstructure works, signalling, telecommunications and civil engineering. Once complete, the line will allow speeds of up to 160 km/h.

Alstom will deliver the ERTMS Level 2 system, digital train control solutions, electrification, power supply, and overhead contact line. The upgrade will enhance operational performance on a key strategic route linking Romania to the Rhine–Danube Corridor and to Southeast Europe via Bulgaria, Greece and Türkiye.

The line connects to Bulgaria across the Danube through the Friendship Bridge, and the works covered by this contract extend up to the bridge’s entry point.
