Alstom to deliver 35 Coradia Stream trains to Bulgaria

Alstom has signed a EUR 600 million contract with Bulgaria’s Ministry of Transport and Communications to supply 35 Coradia Stream electric interregional trains, along with 15 years of maintenance services. The contract, signed by the BULEMU consortium led by Alstom and including local partner RVP Invest, is valued at EUR 720 million in total.

These trains will be the first electric interregional passenger trains delivered by Alstom for use in Bulgaria and mark the first new procurement of such rolling stock in the country in two decades. The six-car trains will be deployed on routes of up to five hours’ duration.

“The Coradia Stream trains for Bulgaria will support the shift towards modern and sustainable transport. This contract completes Alstom’s portfolio in the country, expanding from signalling and infrastructure to rolling stock and maintenance,” Gian Luca Erbacci, President of Alstom Europe, said.

“These trains will help attract more passengers by providing a more regular, comfortable and lower-emission service,” Grozdan Karadjov, Bulgaria’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport and Communications, added.

The Coradia Stream trains will be capable of speeds up to 160 km/h and comply with European standards and Technical Specifications for Interoperability (TSIs). Each unit will have a 100% low-floor design, seating for over 320 passengers, and features including audio-visual information systems, accessible toilets, space for bicycles and prams, luggage racks, and charging points.

The new fleet will be equipped with ERTMS Level 2 signalling and designed for interoperability across major European power systems. The trains will be tailored to the Bulgarian authority’s design specifications, including finishes and colours.

Maintenance will be delivered in partnership with RVP Invest, including scheduled repairs, emergency support, and overhauls, under Alstom’s FlexCare portfolio.

Alstom has sold more than 4,000 Coradia trains globally, with over 700 Coradia Stream trains already ordered in countries including Italy, the Netherlands, Denmark, and Romania.

In addition to this new contract, Alstom is currently involved in maintaining BDZ’s passenger fleet and delivering infrastructure upgrades across Bulgaria.
